Library was built in 1894. It was extremely modern for its time and was able to hold 750,000 volumes. In the interwar period, the library holdings were growing quickly. At the outbreak of World War II, it held about one million items. In the initial postwar years, the Library focused on the recovery of its collections and on the taking over of collections abandoned by the Germans and by Polish nobility. It remained the largest academic library in the country. In December 1999 the new building in the Powiśle area was made available to users, marking a new stage in a history of the University of Warsaw Library. Currently Old Library contains lecture rooms.
